Your honeymoon is a great (and much deserved!) time to relax and be together as newlyweds! In order for your honeymoon to be everything you’ve ever imagined it would be, there’s going to be a lot of planning! That being said, it’s easy to overlook certain details. To help you plan your honeymoon, we’ve made a list of 10 honeymoon mistakes you should try to avoid:

1. Setting an unrealistic budget

Be honest with yourselves when planning your honeymoon budget. You should try to set this upfront to avoid planning something that you won’t be able to afford. However, this doesn’t mean you should limit your options because you may be able to find affordable accommodations, even at exotic locations.

2. Picking the wrong destination

Make sure you choose a destination that both you and your fiance will enjoy. The last thing you want to do is show up to a honeymoon that doesn’t really suit either of your personalities. For tips on choosing the perfect honeymoon for you, see:

3. Using his name too early

Even if you simply cannot wait to start using your new last name, you’ll probably want to still use your maiden name when planning your honeymoon. Changing your name on your passport, license, and other identifiers is going to take awhile. Play it safe and avoid complications by sticking to your maiden name for now!

4. Leaving immediately

Some couples feel pressured to leave for their honeymoon immediately after their wedding. While this isn’t necessarily wrong to do, it’s often quite stressful. Give yourself at least a little time in-between so that you can fully enjoy both your wedding and your honeymoon.

5. Procrastinating on packing

DO NOT save packing for the day you leave (or even the night before). Procrastinating on packing for your honeymoon will only create stress and will make it more likely that you forget something. Start packing early!

6. Overpacking

As long as you’ve got the essentials packed, don’t stress out about everything else. You don’t really need 4 pairs of heels, so don’t be unrealistic with your packing! You don’t want to have to lug around overstuffed suitcases the whole trip.

7. Not packing for the weather

Make sure to check the weather at your destination before you start your packing! You don’t want not having the right type of clothing along to stop you from having a great honeymoon.

8. Overbooking yourselves

While you might be feeling ambitious when you’re planning your honeymoon and want to “do it all,” this probably isn’t realistic. Your honeymoon should be fun, but also relaxing. Some downtime is good, too.

9. Only going to “touristy” places

“Touristy” places are great places to stop on your honeymoon, but probably shouldn’t be the only places you go. These “touristy” locations are often crowded (and sometimes overrated). Don’t be afraid to venture out on your own a little bit and explore!

10. Not having a honeymoon

Honeymoons can definitely be expensive, especially on top of a wedding! However, your honeymoon does not have to “break the bank.” You don’t have to go somewhere extremely exotic or even somewhere that far away. Even if you don’t do something extravagant, you should try to do something to take some time away and celebrate.
