How He Asked

I met Cynthia/”Cynths” during high school in 1998 on a blind date for a debut. After months of courtship, we became a couple. Unfortunately, we broke up just after a month or two.

Sometime between 1999 and 2003 in college, we became a couple again and then broke up for the second time.

Early 2016, we began communicating and became a couple again in May 2016, hopefully, for the third and last time.

In between those years, we communicated, and dated on and off.

In the middle of 2016, I told Cynths that I wanted to have a family and spend the rest of my life with her. Cynths told me that she was on the same page and everything went fast from then on.

I planned to propose as early as 3rd quarter of 2016. In October 2016, I formally asked for the permission and blessing of the parents and family members of Cynths for us to get married.

I decided to propose on or before the end of 2016. Cynths and her family had an idea that I would propose on Christmas Day, especially because we have been discussing marriage plans already and we planned to have my family’s “pamamanhikan” at Cynths’ residence on the 25th of December. “Pamamanhikan” is a [Filipino] tradition when the groom’s family visits the bride’s family to introduce the family members and discuss wedding preparations over a meal.

To have a little surprise, I decided to propose in Bangkok, Thailand.

On 20 December 2016, Cynths’ family traveled to Bangkok. I followed their family the following day.

I planned to propose in Nagaraphirom Park by Chao Phraya River and across Wat Arun Temple, as soon as I arrive Bangkok in the afternoon (this would have allowed me to properly use the RingCam in broad daylight). But, the four to five hours flight delay from Manila to Bangkok prevented me from doing so, as I arrived past six in the evening.

The following day, Cynths’ family and I had a tour at the floating market. I thought that proposing there may be a good idea, but, I did not risk that the ring may fall in the water or any untoward incident. Then, we went to Samphran Elephant Ground & Zoo.

Considering the jam-packed schedule, the remaining options I had in mind on where to propose were at the Intercontinental Hotel where we were staying, or at the airport on 23 December 2016, right before travelling back to Manila. But, I no longer waited because circumstances would again be beyond my control.

After the show and when the park was already closing, Cynths’ family and the other tourists were already leaving towards the car park. I was walking with Cynthia in the middle of the park and noticed that there was nobody left in the area, except for me, Cynths, her brother (Kuya Bobby), sister-in-law (ate Arlene), and nephew (Renzo). Cynths went to the restroom and, right there and then, I instantly thought that I would propose already. The weather and atmosphere were good, the lighting was perfect for the Ring Cam, and it suddenly felt right. I immediately told “ate Arlene” my plans and requested her to record it as I used the Ring Cam, and Cynths happily said “yes!”
