Gregory Fenton and Jackie Gran’s Proposal
Five years later, I decided to reach out to Jackie again. I didn’t know why she crossed my mind again, but I decided to write out to her on MySpace. I was 21 and she was 19. We immediately realized how much we had in common and what a wonderful connection we had. Although she was living in Boston and I was living in Manhattan, we knew that we were meant to be together.
I love surprising Jackie. All throughout our relationship, I’ve always enjoyed creating special and unforgettable moments for her. Limo rides and hot air balloon rides are nice, but I knew that my proposal to her had to be my best effort yet.
I’m not sure how the idea first came into my mind, but I decided back in June that I wanted to have a string quartet playing just for us. To make a wildly long story short, I wanted to have a string quartet “casually” playing somewhere, playing some arbitrary classical music that had no connection to Jackie or I. It wouldn’t be “our” string quartet; it would just be “a” string quartet… until they started playing the first few notes of “our song.” Yes, that’s right: “Digital Love” by Daft Punk; a song that no string quartet would ever play.
I was excited to see the “What’s gong on?” face that was sure to be on Jackie’s face. (It was.) This is when I got down on one knee and asked for Jackie’s hand in marriage. She emphatically said “Yes!” Thankfully, the whole moment was caught on video from three different viewpoints. Oh, I’d also hired a stealth paparazzi photographer to be there from back when we’d arrived in the parking lot, so we also had pictures leading up to the whole event.
The string quartet continued to play some more songs that Jackie and I adore: “In My Life,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and “Unforgettable.” They closed the set by performing “Jackie’s Lullaby,” a song I composed for my bride-to-be many moons ago.
Jackie and I spent the next two hours taking photographers with Neo, our phenomenal photographer. It was a day that we’ll never forget… for many reasons. Thanks, Ring Cam.
