Asking your girlfriend’s parent’s blessing to marry her can be nerve-wracking to say the least. It is a time-honored tradition, and even though it is losing popularity in western cultures, many still view it as a respectful gesture before the big question is popped. If you want to take the more traditional approach to your proposal start with asking for her parent’s blessing by following these steps:

Preparation:

  1. First and foremost ask yourself, “Is asking for her parent’s blessing the right approach?” Some women think this tradition is too old fashioned for them, while others love the idea, so the best way to find out she wants is to just ask. If you are ready to propose then chances are you two have already talked about being married, so don’t be too concerned about spoiling the surprise because she will probably think it is another marriage or wedding related conversation.

  2. When you’re ready to ask for her parent’s blessing, contact them for a private meeting, preferably on their home turf or in a neutral space, such as a restaurant or a coffee shop. Let them know it is going to be just the three of you, and that should tip them off that this meeting is to be kept hush, hushed.

  3. If they live too far away, tag along with your girlfriend the next time she goes home for a holiday or just a visit. When you’re there ask for a private word with her parents either together or separate.

Asking:

  1. Start off by expressing your feelings for their daughter. How much does she mean to? What does she bring to your life? Think long and hard about this because sometimes it is not always easy to put feelings into words.

  2. Explain your wish to marry their daughter. What she brings to your life, you can’t live without and that is why you want her by your side for the rest of your life.

  3. Assure them that you understand this is serious and you are ready to commit to her through marriage.

  4. Again, explain your feelings and how this would make you the happiest man on earth.

  5. Promise to take care of her like they, her parents, have taken care of her.

  6. Now ask. Every thing you have said has led up to this moment, so don’t forget to ask, “May I have your blessing to marry your daughter?”

Things to keep in mind:

  1. Take this serious. This is not a time to be goofing off, but a time to be respectful of her parents (your potential in-laws) time, their position (they can say no),

  2. Be prepared to answer any questions her parents could have i.e., your financial plans for the future.

  3. After they give you a positive answer, let them know when you intend to pop the question.

  4. Make sure when you are meeting with her parents that this is not your first time meeting them.

Now, with this step by step guide you will be able to ask your girlfriend’s parents if they would give their blessing for you to propose to their daughter.
