Writing the perfect wedding vows can be overwhelming. There’s so much you want to say… but how do you say it in front of hundreds of people? Without totally breaking down and weeping? If you and your fiancé have decided to write your own vows, it’s your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share your heart with your beloved and with your closest friends and family. It might seem like a lot of pressure, and it definitely won’t be easy, but it will be so worthwhile! Here are a few tips to help you get started.   Talk about it with your fiancé. Sounds obvious, I know. But this is a pretty important first step. Maybe she’s thinking romantic and you’re thinking sweet but silly. Or maybe you’re writing a series of sonnets and he’s written down all of three sentences. Decide together what you want your vows to be like: long, short, funny, sweet, intimate, classic. Maybe you want to write a song, or recite a poem, or stick with something more traditional with a little personal flair. Or maybe you want to write them together! Decide how you want your vows to go and work from there.   Make promises. That’s what vows are, right? What do you want to do for your fiancé? What do you envision your life together like? Your wedding vows are what guide you through your wedding, so this is something to put a lot of thought into. If you get stuck, ‘to love and cherish’ is always a good place to start.   Talk about what you love. What is it about your fiancé that makes him or her so special? What do they do that makes you laugh? How do they encourage you? What are some of your favorite things about them? Including this in your vows can melt any heart. And it’s always nice to hear why someone loves you. Reminding your fiancé on your big day together is sure to make him or her smile. 7965108654_4861c6221f_c   photo by: Will Fisher To the internet! There are TONS of examples to be found on the web. If you need a little help, read some vows online. Maybe you’ll be inspired.   Don’t be cliché. Seriously. The more authentic your vows are, the more they come from the heart, the more meaningful they’ll be. There’s nothing wrong with traditional vows (they’re classic for a reason), but don’t feel that you have to be overly sappy or cute when writing your own. Just write what you feel. No one can tell you that what you feel is wrong, after all!   Embrace the emotion. As much as you can pretend otherwise, you’re probably gonna be a little bit of a wreck on your wedding day. Anxious, excited, happy, sad, afraid, thrilled, confused, hopeful, giddy. There are a lot of emotions to be experienced. Don’t feel like you have to try and keep your cool, especially if you’re a crier. Embrace the tears, or the excitement, or the joy. You might not know how you will feel when you’re reciting your vows, but you might have a pretty good guess. If you think you’ll be sobbing, it might not be a good idea to go for humorous vows. Again, just be authentic.   Ask someone to help. If you aren’t sure, ask a close friend (maybe the maid of honor or best man) for a little help. Having someone else’s assurance that you’re on the right track can help get over the wedding vow jitters.   Ask questions. Why are you getting married? What did you think of your fiancé when you first met? How did he propose? What are you most excited about? When did you know you were in love? How does your fiancé inspire or challenge or encourage or support you? Sometimes it can help to write out the answers to some questions like these to help you get started. Read back through your answers. Maybe something will spark some inspiration! If nothing else, it can be a good reminder of what’s really important: your love and the life you’re about to start together. Remember, the things that are unique about you and your fiancé are good things to include in your vows. 4768985621_da0ee42836_n   photo by: Jason Devaun Don’t procrastinate. This is not the time for that. Plan to write your vows a few months before the wedding. You’ll be less stressed and the vows will be much better! It requires a lot of thought to write from your heart, so don’t expect to crank it out in a single night.   Practice reading. Maybe you accidentally wrote yourself a tongue twister. Practice reading through your vows to make sure you can get through them. It’ll help ease your nerves the day of!   Don’t forget! Make sure you have a copy of your vows on the big day. If you’re afraid you’ll forget, ask someone to hold on to your vows for you, or give them to the officiator. Again, planning ahead will help with the stress. A little effort ahead of time will save you a lot of anxiety! One less thing to worry about on your wedding day is always a good thing!   And most of all… do you. Yes, it can feel like there’s a lot of pressure to write the perfect vows. But really, it’s not about how they sound to anyone but you and your fiancé. You know your fiancé better than anyone else in the world, so write the vows you know they need to hear. If she loves corny jokes, by all means throw one in. If he’s very serious, write serious vows. Your wedding vows are a chance to share your heart with the person you are going to spend your life with. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks or says! Write from your heart, that’s what counts.   Good luck! Please share your best vows with us in the comments below! Maggie thinks of her life as music, not always good music but still having form and melody. And yes, that is a literary reference.  Thinking about proposing soon? Check us out!
